Promising Programs

The following are programs that have begun to address the needs of specific populations of students.  These programs are based on research that show a positive impact on learning.  The Instructional Program Advisory Committee invites WASA members to send in descriptions of programs that have been implemented in your district and demonstrate the ability to close the achievement gap.  

Promising Programs in Reading top

Program Title: Summer Reading Camp
Description: This is an intense intervention for students reading below grade level. They meet for four weeks, 3.5 hours daily, five days/week. Students typically make six months or more gain in reading skills. District resources include:
  • Rewards
  • Read Naturally
  • Step Up to Writing 
  • Skills for Success.

Program Title: ACHIEVE
Description: The Central Kitsap School District ACHIEVE Program is designed to support students from underrepresented populations as they undertake rigorous college preparatory coursework. The ninth grade ACHIEVE class runs for the full year as an elective credit. Students receive small group study session support two days each week. The rest of the course time is used for skills development using Washington state history and the literature from their pre-AP English class as content. Students contract to continue college preparatory classes through high school. Sophomores complete at least one honors class in English or social studies along with foreign language and appropriate math and science courses. Juniors and seniors maintain a college pre schedule that includes a minimum of two AP classes during those two years.

Program Title: Second Shot Reading
Description: This program focuses on an important reading comprehension skill—fluency. Students read a one minute “cold & hot” read. Then, they graph both of their CWPM scores. Students actively read one-on-one each day. They keep their own progress graphs and do their own record keeping. Students really like this program.

Program Title: The Six-Minute Solution: A Reading Fluency Program
Description: This is a great entry task that engages all students. Students are paired according to reading level. They time each other and read for one minute. They record their CWPM. Students read same passage each day for one week. This program is targeted for remedial high school and grades 3-8.

Program Title: Rewards
Description: Focus is phonemic awareness and decoding multisyllabic words. This is targeted for secondary students. These words can be used for spelling. Students use the skills to spell and to sound out words in the Second Shot Reading Program.

Program Title: Early Childhood Care and Education
Description:

We have joined with our community preschools to work on early literacy skills before kindergarten.  We added a half day kindergarten for the children who do not have early reading skills.  All our community preschool partners use the same curriculum.

Description: This is a technology-based algebra program. This methodology incorporates story problems as a context to ground students' understanding of the symbolic language of algebra.
