OLYMPIA, Washington –
Anna-Maria de la Fuente, a
Leadership for Learning program participant at the University of Washington,
is the recipient of the fourth annual Dr. Doyle E. Winter Scholarship for
Administrative Leadership in Education. The scholarship is awarded by the
Washington Association of School Administrators (WASA) and Seattle-Northwest
Securities Corporation (SNW). SNW Vice President Mark Prussing and WASA
President Steve Chestnut (superintendent, Moses Lake School District) made
the announcement of the award yesterday at the WASA Awards Luncheon in Spokane.
Ms. de la Fuente’s daughter, Vanny Chham, accepted the scholarship award on
behalf of her mother, who is presently out the country. The luncheon was
part of the annual WASA/AWSP Summer Conference for school administrators,
which is jointly sponsored by WASA and the Association of Washington School
Principals (AWSP). The conference began on Sunday and runs through Tuesday,
June 26. Upon learning of her selection, Ms. de la Fuente commented, “I am honored to be selected as a recipient of the Doyle E. Winter Scholarship for Administrative Leadership in Education. In my first year of doctoral studies in Educational Leadership, I have gained so much from the knowledge and experience of my peers and professors. I am very grateful to the Washington Association of School Administrators and the Seattle-Northwest Securities Corporation for helping me continue my doctoral work in mathematics education leadership. Your support empowers me to keep reaching for my goals. I will honor your commitment by making a difference in mathematics education in the state of Washington and by motivating others to succeed and to lead.” Currently the director of Seattle MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement)—a K–12 precollege program that helps underrepresented students achieve their full potential—de la Fuente has 20 years’ experience as an educator, including 14 years as a classroom math and English teacher. This fall, de la Fuente will be going into her second year as a doctoral student at the University of Washington. She earned her master’s degree in education from Stanford University and her bachelor’s degree in English from the University of California at Berkeley. The Winter Scholarship is designed to assist talented and committed educational administrators as they enhance those skills needed to serve as educational leaders in the field of public education. Seattle-Northwest Securities Corp. and WASA recognize the need to support and encourage educational administrators to advance their administrative leadership skills in the field of education as the demands placed upon school administrators intensify as they work to meet the challenges and celebrate the successes of new state graduation requirements and No Child Left Behind legislation. Through this scholarship, $1,000 is awarded to a Washington school administrator who is in or will begin a doctoral program in education in the year the award is presented. It was established in honor of Dr. Doyle Winter, who retired in 2002 after completing 44 years of service for Washington public schools. Dr. Winter is a former executive director of WASA and has been recognized repeatedly for exhibiting exemplary leadership ability and enhancing school administration throughout his career.
