recipients Larry Keller (Mansfield) and Gene Schmidt (Bridgeport) credit
supportive and talented staff for the great work being done in their
districts. OLYMPIA, Washington – Today, the Washington Association of School Administrators (WASA) and the PEMCO Foundation announced two of three recipients of the 2007 Robert J. Handy Most Effective Administrator Awards. Superintendent Larry Keller, Mansfield School District, received the honor in the small district category and Superintendent Gene Schmidt, Bridgeport School District, received the award for mid-sized districts. Jim Menzies of the PEMCO Foundation and WASA Executive Director Paul Rosier presented the awards at the WASA Small Schools Conference in Yakima. A third administrator for the large district category will be recognized in May at WASA’s Superintendent Workshop in Chelan.“To be nominated by a staff colleague and recognized by my peers is indeed an honor,” commented Mr. Keller upon learning of the award. “This award is the culmination of a dedicated staff committing themselves in an extraordinary manner to ensure every student within the Mansfield School District has a chance to achieve his or her dreams. From figuring out how to support an all-day kindergarten and preschool without a staff increase to introducing advanced placement classes and computer-based interventions in our core subject areas, we have walked the path together. While I am being recognized as the selectee, I know that a leader only succeeds when those who follow believe. The Mansfield team believes and because of that I am honored today.” In response to receiving the award for mid-sized districts, Mr. Schmidt remarked, “I have long held the belief that if you surround yourself with good people; good things will happen. As it turns out, incredible things can happen. Bridgeport’s remarkable success story is really a testament to the countless examples of good instruction that take place in our classrooms every day. At a recent graduation ceremony, a senior shared with me the best thing he liked about our staff. He said, ‘You gave us hope. Because I have hope, my younger brothers and sisters have hope.’ Hope, it turns out, is a very powerful tool. The staff in our school dispenses it daily. By honoring me, WASA and PEMCO honor an incredibly talented staff. They are the real heroes in our school. I accept this honor on their behalf.” Three awards are presented each year, based on district-size categories, with a $10,000 award equally divided by the winners. Approximately one-third of Washington’s school districts are represented in each category. The award can be used for personal or professional growth and/or to support and disseminate information about a successful school or district program. A peer committee selects the winners from nominations that detail how each nominee is taking part in actualizing the nine characteristics of high performing schools/districts as defined by research from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. In its sixth year, the Robert J. Handy Most Effective Administrator Awards seek to recognize outstanding public school administrators in Washington state. Robert J. Handy, the awards’ namesake, founded the PEMCO Life Insurance Company. Handy was a Seattle schoolteacher during the Great Depression whose vision of providing low-cost loans to schoolteachers grew into what is now the School Employees Credit Union of Washington. The PEMCO Foundation is an alliance of companies inclusive of PEMCO Insurance Company, the School Employees Credit Union of Washington and Evergreen Bank. The Washington Association of School Administrators is committed to the development of quality education through professional leadership. Members benefit from a supportive community of professional leaders working to provide insightful and valuable training, support and resources to education leaders, and to sustain a positive impact on legislative and community leaders. With more than 1,600 members, membership is open to all education administrators in central office, building managements and educational agency positions. A not-for profit organization, WASA is funded by membership dues and association events. # # # # # Ed. Note: |
