Wahluke School District Assistant Superintendent Delcine Mesa-Johnson awarded the 2005 Dr. Doyle E. Winter Scholarship for Administrative Leadership In Education

 

OLYMPIA, Washington – Assistant Superintendent Delcine Mesa-Johnson, Wahluke School District, was awarded the 2005 Dr. Doyle E. Winter Scholarship for Administrative Leadership in Education from the Seattle-Northwest Securities Corporation and the Washington Association of School Administrators (WASA). The announcement and presentation was made today at the WASA awards luncheon held in conjunction with the annual summer conference for school administrators, which is jointly sponsored by WASA and the Association of Washington School Principals (AWSP). Jon Gores, vice president, Seattle-Northwest Securities Corporation, presented the award to Ms. Mesa-Johnson.

Upon learning of her selection, Ms. Mesa-Johnson commented, 

“I am deeply honored to be this year's recipient of the Doyle E. Winter Scholarship. Dr. Winter has been an outstanding advocate for educators across the state. I hope to follow in his tradition by supporting and mentoring other teaching professionals in years to come. Personally, this award gives me the added motivation to complete my doctoral program." 

Ms. Mesa-Johnson impressed the scholarship committee by her deep commitment to improving education for all students as shown in her work with teachers and students in Wahluke School District. In addition to a developing a three-tiered bilingual model that has been shared throughout the state as well as nationally, she has designed a new teacher mentoring program that is being reviewed for possible replication. She begins her first superintendency in Hockinson School District this fall.

Ms. Mesa-Johnson is working toward her doctoral degree in educational leadership at Washington State University.

The Winter Scholarship is designed to assist talented and committed educational administrators as they enhance those skills needed to serve as educational leaders in the field of public education. Seattle-Northwest Securities Corp. and WASA recognize the need to support and encourage educational administrators to advance their administrative leadership skills in the field of education as the demands placed upon school administrators intensify as they work to meet the challenges and celebrate the successes implementing new state graduation requirements and changes imposed by the No Child Left Behind legislation. 

Through this annual scholarship, $1,000 is awarded to a Washington school administrator who is in or will begin a doctoral program in education in the year the award is presented. It was established in honor of Dr. Doyle Winter, who retired in 2002 after completing 44 years of service for Washington public schools. Former executive director of WASA, Dr. Winter has been recognized repeatedly for exhibiting exemplary leadership ability and enhancing school administration throughout his career.
