The Why, What, Who, Where, and How of Early
Learning and Public Schools
Mary Seaton, Director of Early Learning, OSPI
Research has shown that between birth and age eight children develop 80%
of the brain structure upon which all their future learning will be
built. Why should schools get serious about early learning? What does
research say about how early learning connections and curriculum
alignment can enhance and sustain gains made PreK–3rd grade? Whose
is there to help schools with planning and implementation? Learn how
districts large and small can extend and improve early learning
opportunities for young children.
Race to the Top
Alan Burke, Ed.D., Deputy Superintendent, K–12 Education, OSPI
In this session, the components of the ARRA Race to the Top
grant application will be reviewed and discussed. Since the Governor and
the planning committee have decided to complete a Round 1 application
(December 2009), timelines are short. An update on the progress of the
RTTT planning will be provided, as will a brief description of plans for
a Round 2 try, assuming that success is not achieved in Round 1.
Finally, a summary of the ARRA Investing in Innovation Grants and
Teacher Incentive Funds, both available to districts, will be
shared.
