2009-10 Goals & Strategies

COMPETENT, EFFECTIVE, ETHICAL & VISIONARY LEADERSHIP

  • Develop effective human resource strategies to attract, identify, recruit, train, mentor, and retain high quality, diverse leaders of instruction.
  • Expand diversity in development and selection of leaders by building partnerships with statewide minority organizations and with colleges/universities.
  • Partner with other professional organizations to enhance educational leadership capacity.

CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT OF SYSTEMS TO INCREASE STUDENT LEARNING 

  • Provide professional development opportunities for administrators to assume their responsibility for improving teaching and learning.
  • Create a member network for research and current practices to increase student success, reduce the achievement gap, and ensure high standards for all.
  • Advocate for effective instructional practices and building the skills of educational leaders.
    • Develop and disseminate, as appropriate, position papers regarding issues that affect student learning.
    • Work with the Governor's office to ensure that performance incentives are tied to student achievement.
  • Gather and disseminate research on effective accountability models linked to student achievement.

LEGISLATIVE & COMMUNITY SUPPORT FOR PUBLIC SCHOOLS  

  • Maintain an active leadership role in formulating policy and legislation related to education, sharpening the focus on amply funding our public schools.
    • Take the lead in recommending and advocating for changes in the revenue system to support adequate funding.
  • Support the simple majority for bonds.
  • Regions will promote AASA membership to effect changes in ESEA (NCLB) and IDEA that will sustain benefits to sustain benefits to students while eliminating negative impacts of the law.
  • Develop a compelling vision of what students need to be able to do in a global society and design a learning environment and assessment system that supports the vision.
