Spokane educator, Tammy Campbell, receives
educational leadership scholarship to support graduate studies

OLYMPIA, Washington—Tammy Campbell, a Washington State University doctoral student and district administrator in the Spokane School District, is the recipient of the fifth annual Dr. Doyle E. Winter Scholarship for Administrative Leadership in Education. The scholarship is awarded by the Washington Association of School Administrators (WASA) and Seattle-Northwest Securities Corporation (SNW). SNW Senior Vice President Trevor Carlson and WASA President John Erickson (superintendent, Vancouver School District) made the announcement of the award yesterday at the WASA Awards Luncheon in Spokane. The luncheon was part of the annual WASA/AWSP Summer Conference for school administrators, which is jointly sponsored by WASA and the Association of Washington School Principals (AWSP). The conference began on Sunday, June 29 and ended Tuesday, July 1.

Upon learning of her selection, Ms. Campbell commented,

“Reflecting on the years of service Doyle E. Winter committed to improving administrative leadership, I am honored to be the recipient of the 2008 Doyle E. Winter Scholarship. My doctoral focus is on the new work of school leaders in fostering student voice, so we create engaging and relevant learning opportunities for a very diverse student body. In these environments, educators hold an unshakeable belief in the promise and potential of EVERY student, and they know the success of any reform depends on their willingness to authorize and act on the insights of their students.”

Currently the executive director of Teaching and Learning Services with the Spokane School District, Campbell has over 10 years’ experience as an educator. She is completing the third year of a four-year doctoral program at WSU. In 1999 she earned a masters degree in curriculum and instruction from Eastern Washington University. Her undergraduate work was in elementary education, graduating with a BS degree from Minot State University, Minot, North Dakota in 1996.

The Winter Scholarship is designed to assist talented and committed educational administrators as they enhance those skills needed to serve as educational leaders in the field of public education. Seattle-Northwest Securities Corporation and WASA recognize the need to support and encourage educational administrators to advance their administrative leadership skills in the field of education as the demands placed upon school administrators intensify as they work to meet the challenges and celebrate the successes of new state graduation requirements and No Child Left Behind legislation.

Through this scholarship, $1,000 is awarded to a Washington school administrator who is in or will begin a doctoral program in education in the year the award is presented. It was established in honor of Dr. Doyle Winter, who retired in 2002 after completing 44 years of service for Washington public schools. Dr. Winter is a former executive director of WASA and has been recognized repeatedly for exhibiting exemplary leadership ability and enhancing school administration throughout his career.
